TitleReSTOR multifocal IOL implantation in monocular indications
Abstract Nr.349
PurposeTo evaluate the performance of the Alcon ReSTOR IOL implantation in monocular indications.
Methods9 eyes of 9 patients had monocular cataract surgery with implantation of the Acrysof SN60D3 ReSTOR IOL. Age range was 23-74 years. Cataract etiology was : traumatic (2), congenital (2), Fuchs Heterochromic Uveitis (3), age related (1), refractive (1). Controlateral lens was systematically clear (8) or pseudophakic (1). Parameters analyzed included distance UCVA and BCVA, near UCVA and a quality-of-life questionnaire.
ResultsDistance binocular vision was improved in all cases. BCVA for distance and near vision is in young patients with clear and accommodating controlateral lens was subjectively better with the natural lens even if the eye with the multifocal IOL shows 20/15 for distance vision and P1 for near vision. Young patients used only their natural accommodating lens for near vision. Presbyopic patients improved near UCVA with a high degree of satisfaction.
ConclusionMonocular multifocal lens implantation was well tolerated in all cases.
Despite very satisfying postoperative results obtained in non presbyopic patients with the ReSTOR lens, quality of vision and visual acuity remained better with the controlateral natural lens. Monocular implantation of Acrysof Restor with an accommodating controlateral eye will restore binocular distance vision but not binocular near vision as the accommodating eye will be preferred for near vision. Advantage of monocular implantation in young patients is prevention of age-related presbyopic complaints. Monocular implantation of the Acrysof multifocal IOL does not disturb presbyopic patients and will improve near UCVA.
