Title | Macular drusen disappear after treatment with Nutrof (Omega): A Case report |
Purpose | To examine the effect of oral supplementation of macular pigments, antioxidants and omega 3 on a person with soft drusen. |
Methods | We report the case of a 70 year old woman. Since 2001, she presented in the fundus examination soft and confluent drusen, more important in the left eye. Fundus photography was done every year starting in 2005. She has been receiving an oral supplementation of Nutrof (start 25/02/2003), followed by Nutrof Omega (start 1/12/2006). Since 2006, she has also been treated with rosuvastatine (Crestor) 5mg a day and since 2007 with acetylsalicylic acid (Merck Asa), 80 mg a day. |
Results | Especially the left fundus examination showed a progressive and spectacular disappearance of the soft drusen. An OCT done on July 2008 confirmed this result. The best corrected visual acuity was 1.0 in 2003 and did not alter in time. The role of Nutrof Omega is not clearly known, but this oral supplementation is a combination of antioxidants (vitamins), minerals (zinc, manganese, selenium, and copper), pigments (lutein, zeaxanthin) and omega-3 which are known to reduce the risk of development of advanced AMD. Some lipids (omega-3) have properties capable of modulating cellular damage associated with advanced AMD. Lutein and zeaxanthin contained in Nutrof Omega are macular pigments. Macular pigments are thought to protect against retinal damage by filtering out phototoxic short-wave length visible light and by defending rod outer segment membranes from oxidative stress. These data suggest an association between the disappearance of drusen and this oral supplementation. |
Conclusion | To validate this interesting result, a study with more participants would be very useful. |
