TitleNystagmus in infancy
Abstract Nr.350
PurposeTo propose a systematic investigation to diagnose this complex entity in infancy and childhood and to present a clear and useful classification of nystagmus in infancy.
MethodsA literature review on nystagmus in infancy was performed and an analysis was made of the experience of paediatric ophthalmologists in the clinic with those patients.
ResultsWe present a classification in which nystagmus with an onset before six months is called early onset nystagmus and is divided - after a systematic investigation in the majority of those patients- in sensory (or ocular disease related nystagmus), congenital idiopathic nystagmus and neurological nystagmus.
ConclusionBy using a clear clinically relevant terminology, incorrect and confusing labels can be minimised. The term ' congenital nystagmus' should be avoided in describing early onset nystagmus since it has variable use.
