TitlePerimetric follow-up. Rate of glaucomatous functional progression
Abstract Nr.228
PurposeTo discuss tools for perimetric progression analysis.
The goal of glaucoma treatment is to maintain the patient’s visual function and related quality of life (EGS guidelines). In glaucoma visual function is best measured by perimetry. Therefore, it is appropriate to frequently measure the visual field in patients with glaucoma.
Glaucoma is a progressive disease and we may expect most glaucoma patients to show at least some progression during the course of the disease. Event analysis helps to detect progression. This type of analysis is typically used as an outcome in randomized clinical trials, and also for detection of progression in clinical practice. Event analysis cannot quantify progression or provide rate of progression.
Rate of progression quantifies the progression, it tells us the velocity of progression. The rate of progression concept is based on linear trend analysis typically presenting the yearly rate of change, which is helpful for identification of patients at risk for developing serious visual field loss. Thus, rate of progression is important and helps to individualize clinical care of glaucoma patients.
We do not have to choose between event analysis and rate of progression analysis.
The two types of analyses serve different purposes. Event analysis tells whether progression has occurred while rate of progression present the course of the disease.
