Purpose | Quality of vision was evaluated in 50 eyes with different anterior stromal corneal dystrophies using corneal topography and visual acuity before and after treatment. Corneal dystrophies included recurrent erosions, map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy, bandkeratopathie and Reiss-Bückler corneal dystrophy. |
Methods | Patients were treated with YAG-laser corneal punctures, photo-therapeutic keratectomy, corneal scraping and application of Na-EDTA according to the corneal pathology. In case of photo-therapeutic keratectomy, a double treatment schedule (myopia + hyperopia) was used in order not to induce any refractive changes. Evaluation was done before treatment and 3 months after treatment. |
Results | After treatment smoothness of corneal topography improved in all eyes as well as visual acuity. In eyes with only a small area of partially pre-pupillary recurrent corneal erosion, corneal topography improved, but not visual acuity. Five eyes were scheduled for cataract surgery. After treatment of the anterior corneal dystrophy, no cataract surgery was necessary because of sufficient improvement in visual acuity. |
Conclusion | Corneal imaging is a possible tool for evaluation of corneal anterior stromal dystrophies and its possible impact on visual acuity. Different treatment strategies may lead to improvement of symptoms, visual acuity and corneal smoothness. |
