Title | Melanocytic iris tumors: differential diagnosis and management |
Abstract Nr. | 205 |
Purpose | To present the differential diagnosis of pigmented iris tumours and their management. |
Methods | A systematic review. |
Results | The differential diagnosis of pigmented iris tumours consists of melanocytosis, naevus, atypical melanocytic tumour, melanocytoma, melanoma and some miscellaneous tumours. The diagnosis is classically made by non invasive techniques, including slit lamp examination and photos, measurement of intraocular pressure, visual fields, gonioscopy and ultrasonography (UBM and 20 MHz). Incisional biopsy has only a relative value. |
Conclusion | In benign and atypical tumours, periodic observation is the standard management. Evidence of growth usually implies a malignant melanoma, for which protontherapy is a safe conservative treatment. |
