TitleS100 in screening for uveal melanoma metastases
Abstract Nr.333
PurposeTo investigate the role of the S100 serum test in the follow-up of uveal melanoma patients for metastases. In skin melanoma S100 serum test is successfully used for screening for metastases and monitoring of systemic therapy.
Methods30 patients (< 70 years) with a uveal melanoma with a diameter > 10 or a height > 5 mm were included in the study. The patients were followed up with liver function tests, S100 serum test and liver ultrasound, every 6 months during 5 years.
ResultsDuring follow-up 6 patients developed metastases from their uveal melanoma. In 5 patients, metastases were first detected by liver ultrasound, in 1 patient with a S100 serum test.
ConclusionS100 serum test is a useful test for the identification of uveal melanoma metastases and could identify metastases better than liver function tests. Nevertheless, liver ultrasound could detect uveal melanoma metastases earlier than any of the serum tests. S100 serum test may be useful in the monitoring of systemic therapy.
