TitleCustomized iris repair
Abstract Nr.144
PurposeTo present surgical technique and preliminary results on safety, handling and performance of the foldable silicone ArtificialIris.
MethodsThe patient presented with significant traumatic loss of iris tissue. During preoperative examination a photo of the other eye was taken and sent to the manufacturer as target for individual colour adjustment of the ArtificialIris (Dr. Schmidt Intraocularlinsen, Germany). The patient was scheduled for Artisan irisclaw IOL fixation in combination with iris reconstruction. The ArtificialIris was cut by scissors to the segment size needed. The segment was then sutured to the remaining natural iris and an additional scleral fixation was performed using the matras suture technique. Un- (UCVA) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure and slit lamp examination were assessed pre- and postoperatively.
ResultsPostoperative slit lamp examination showed good centration and fixation of the IOL and ArtificialIris. UCVA and BCVA improved but were limited by other traumatic ocular damage. Subjective photophobia and glare decreased significantly and the patient was very happy with the cosmetic result.
ConclusionFirst results show the ArtificialIris is an excellent solution for aniridia cases presenting convincing cosmetic options. The foldable implant reveals good properties for implantation and gives the flexibility to treat any case individually. Although the first results are very promising further investigations and longer follow-up times are required.
