TitleVisual Outcome after Full Macular Translocation for Age-related Macular Degeneration : Results of 2003 (64)
Abstract Nr.181
PurposeTo report the change in visual function after full macular translocation with 360° retinotomy and silicone oil tamponade in patients with age-related macular degeneration
Methods64 consecutive eyes on 64 patients with ARMD who underwent a FMT and extra-ocular muscle surgery in our departement between 08/01/2003 and 17/12/2003 are included in this study.
ResultsMedian distance acuity improved from 1.06 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) units (approximately 20/200) before surgery to 0.77 logMAR units (approximately 20/90) (P<0.001). In patients with preoperative distance acuity of 20/80 or better, 88% of patients remained in this range of acuity. In patients with preoperative distance acuity of between 20/200 and 20/80, 43% of patient improved to 20/80 or better and 28.5% remained in this range of acuity. In patients with preoperative distance acuity of worse than 20/200, 14% of patients improved to 20/80 or better.
ConclusionWith a mean improvement of 4 lines on the Snellen chart and a relatively low rate of surgical complications, the macular translocation confirms its role as a safe an effective therapeutic option in treatment of age-related subfoveal CNV. The subanalysis shows that an early diagnosis and a preserved pre-operative visual acuity benefits the functional results of this procedure.
