| Title | Severe depression in a glaucoma patient resulting from concomitant use of oral and topical beta blockers: a case report |
| Abstract Nr. | 169 |
| Purpose | Since topical beta blockers may cause systemic side-effects and/or exacerbations of preexisting medical conditions, it is very important for clinicians to be aware of all possible (sometimes rare) side-effects, other concomitant medications, and chronic medical conditions. Adverse events of beta blockers that affect the central nervous system are often neglected and misdiagnosed, and therefore underreported. A medline search revealed that 30 to 45% of patients taking topical beta blockers were also receiving concurrent medications for obstructive lung disease, congestive heart failure and/or depression. This case report reminds us to treat the whole patient and not just the intraocular pressure. |
