TitleVisual field defects in myopic eyes combining peripapillary staphyloma and gamma peripapillary atrophy
PurposeTo compare the proportion of visual field defects (VFDs) between eyes combining peripapillary staphyloma and gamma peripapillary atrophy either in the absence (combination) or presence (cavitation) of a peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation. To compare the ovality index (OI) in these groups and to investigate whether the location of cavitations matches VFDs distribution, which might help differentiate glaucoma from myopia-related damages.
MethodsUsing optical coherence tomography, eyes were sorted either as combination or cavitation. The proportion of VFDs and that of low OI (≤0.8) were compared between these groups. Using Garway-Heath’s method, the correlation between cavitations’ location and VFDs’ distribution was analyzed.
Results74 eyes of 55 subjects were selected: 61 combinations, 13 cavitations. VFDs were more frequent in cavitation (62%) than in combination (12%) (Fisher, p<0.001) eyes. The mean OI was lower (0.6 versus 0.9), (Student, p<0.001) and the proportion of low OI was higher (77% versus 28%) (Fisher, p<0.001) in cavitation eyes. 25% of cavitation’s eyes with VFDs had clusters whose distribution matched the cavitation’s location in 50% of cases.
ConclusionVFDs were significantly more frequent in cavitation eyes and in eyes with low OI, the latest being significantly more frequent in the cavitation group, suggesting higher strains. Exclusion criteria left too few eyes to draw a formal conclusion about cavitation-function’s matching. Studies including more patients are required.
