TitleCentration and visual acuity of the bag-in-the-lens
Abstract Nr.124
PurposeTo examine the decentration with the bag-in-the-lens (Morcher 89 A) and the outcome of visual acuity.
MethodsA retrospective study on 72 eyes of 49 patients who received a Morcher 89 A implant between October 2001 and June 2005. 5 Weeks, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years after uneventful phacoemulsification, visual acuity and decentration with red-reflex slit lamp photography were evaluated.
ResultsThere was very little decentration in the vertical plane: the mean was 0.26mm at a mean angle of 0.26° from the X-as. The mean postoperative visual acuity in healthy eyes was 0.99D +/- 0.18D; there was no correlation however with the amount of decentration.
ConclusionThe observed mean decentration corresponds to the intended decentration towards the angle kappa. This study confirms that visual acuity is not correlated with decentration when monofocal IOLs are implanted. The stable and predictable position of the Morcher 89A is however an advantage for future development of the IOL in a multifocal optic.
