TitleEndoscopy of lacrymal duct
Abstract Nr.110
PurposeThe study presents a new technique for the examination of the lacrymal duct, i.e. the endoscopy. It demonstrates the advantages and permits to open up new ways to act on the lacrymal duct.
MethodsPerspectively 40 eyes of 22 patients with clear pathology: epiphora, chronic or acute dacryocystitis, stenosis were examined and operated by means of endoscopy between april 2005 and august 2005. All the patients were operated by a single surgeon in Mechelen Belgium. All patients were pre- and post- operatively examined radiologically by means of a CT-scan of the lacrymal duct by contrast and also rinse of the lacrymal duct with fysiological serum.
ResultsIn all the cases of pre- or postsacale partial or total stenosis, ephiphora, and dacryocystitis , after endoscopy of the lacrymal duct we had an average successrate of 100% for presacale and 80,64% for postsacale stenosis.
ConclusionThe endoscopy of the lacrymal duct is an excellent atraumatic simple and unexpensive examination technique in the lacrymal pathology and can be an interesting alternative for dacryocystorhinography and the dacryocystorhinostomy.
