| Title | IOLs with Physiological Absorption / Transmission Characteristics |
| Abstract Nr. | 120 |
| Purpose | At the present time, almost all IOLs contain a UV blocking chromophore and many IOLs also contain a blue blocking chromophore. It is correctly claimed that these chromophores prevent excessive retinal damage caused by EM irradiation. However, none of these IOLs have physiological transmission characteristics. This shortcoming results in more photophobia, distorted color perception, and chromatic aberration as compared with an IOL having absorption/transmission qualities that truly match those of the healthy 50-60 y/o human lens. This statement has been underpinned by experimental evidence to be presented, and will be illustrated by graphs of transmission as a function of wavelength, and by photographs demonstrating the visual experience from the patient’s perspective. |
